How to check a policy schedule for errors

Schedules are often issued with small mistakes that only matter at claim time. Work through these steps every time a schedule arrives.

1. The insured

  • Legal name exactly matches Companies House, including Ltd or LLP.
  • Subsidiaries and trading names are listed.
  • Business description matches what the client really does.

2. Dates and premium

  • Start and expiry dates are right.
  • Premium and IPT match the quote you accepted.

3. Premises

  • Every address is shown, with the correct postcode.
  • Sums insured are shown for each location.

4. Covers, limits and excesses

  • Every section agreed in the quote is there.
  • Limits of indemnity (for example £5m employers' liability) are correct.
  • Excesses match the quote — look for higher excesses for escape of water or subsidence.

5. Endorsements

  • Read every endorsement code and title.
  • Look for new warranties, such as alarm or security conditions, that the client must follow.
  • Tell the client about any condition precedent in writing.

6. Compare with last year

Put the new schedule next to the expiring one and note every change. Clients should hear about changes from you, not at claim time.
